Paul C. Smedberg
Paul C. Smedberg was first elected to the Alexandria City Council in May 2003 and was re-elected to a second term in May 2006. A resident of Old Town, he has been active with civic and volunteer activities for many years. Prior to being elected to the City Council, he served on the Economic Opportunities Commission and the Commission on Aging. As a member of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee (BFAAC) he gained a thorough knowledge of the City’s annual budgetary process. As President of his local Homeowner’s Association he became familiar with issues ranging from traffic to residential and commercial development and their impact on City neighborhoods. As a volunteer with Whitman-Walker Clinic and as Board President of Community Partners for Children he gained a healthy respect for the essential work of community based non-profits. A former Chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee, he also served as Treasurer of the Moran for Delegate Campaign. This past summer he was a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
As a member of Council he serves on the Council of Governments' Public Safety Policy Committee as well as Alexandria’s newly-created Economic Sustainability Committee, Economic Opportunities Commission, Northern Virginia Regional Commission, Employee Compensation Committee, Alexandria Marketing Committee, Sister Cities Committee, Waterfront Committee and the Woodrow Wilson Neighborhood Task Force. He is also a member of the VRE Operations Board. He was named an alternate to NVTC in June, 2005 and has been a commissioner since June 2006. He also represents the Council on INOVA Alexandria Hospital Task Force. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Alexandria Chapter of the American Red Cross as well as Senior Services of Alexandria.
He is Director of Policy & Public Affairs at the American Society of Nephrology. He earned degrees in Economics and History from Allegheny College and is a Fellow, Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia.
As a member of the Alexandria City Council, he has championed many key City initiatives, worked to address issues dealing with the quality of life of Alexandria residents and consistently stressed the need for fiscal efficiency and budgetary transparency. He continues to play a major role in addressing the issues surrounding the Mirant Power Plant. He remains highly regarded for his work during the budget process and is dedicated to assuring that local government remain responsive, efficient and accountable.
