Paul Smedberg, first elected to the Alexandria City Council in May 2003, was re-elected to a fourth term in 2012. He served on the City’s highly visible Economic Sustainability committee, which offered long range and short term solutions to assure Alexandria’s economic viability during the economic downturn. He is a member of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority Planning committee, the Alexandria Marketing committee and the City’s Waterfront committee. He co-chaired the Alexandria Strategic Plan, which created a guide for directing financial resources and analyzing program effectiveness. As co-chair of the Council’s Legislative Subcommittee he monitors proposed state and federal legislation of interest to the City. With Mayor Euille he is on the Pension & Employee Compensation Committee and serves on the Board of Governors of the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association. A member of the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Operations Board since 2005, he was Chair of the organization in 2013 and currently serves as Secretary. As the immediate past Chair of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission Mr. Smedberg oversaw the hiring of a new Executive Director and guided the organization during a period change and renewal. Mr. Smedberg earned degrees in economics and history from Allegheny College and is a Fellow, Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. In 2010, Equality Virginia named him an Outstanding Virginian.
